COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Chemistry involves the study of matter and energy. Many common and current problems of the modern world are related to the course content. The central theme of the course is problem solving within chemistry. The Pennsylvania Chemistry standards, http://www.pdesas.org/module/assessment/Keystone.aspx#, will be covered in this class, which include the following topics:

  • Matter and Measurement
  • Atoms, Molecules, and Ions
  • Stoichiometry
  • Aqueous Solutions
  • Thermochemistry
  • Periodic Properties
  • Solids, Liquids, and Gases
  • Chemical Bonding
  • Molecular Geometry
  • Properties of Solutions
  • Chemical Kinetics
  • Acids and Bases
  • Nuclear Chemistry

We will explore these topics through discussions, laboratory investigations, teacher demonstrations, in-class assignments and homework assignments.

Grades will be determined on a point basis. Each quarter will be worth 22.5% of a student’s overall chemistry grade.

                        Grading will include:

Chapter Tests- at the end of each chapter there will be a 100 pt. test.

Quizzes- (both announced and unannounced)- 10 to 25 points each

Lab Reports- 20 to 40 points each

Research Reports and Oral Reports- 70 to 150 points

Class Activities and Projects- 10 to 50 points each

Midterm Exam- students will take a comprehensive test on the content covered in the first half of the year. The midterm will be worth 200 points in the second quarter grade.

Final Exam - students will take a comprehensive test on the content covered over the entire year of chemistry. The final will be worth 10% of a student’s overall chemistry grade.

*All assignments that are due must be handed in at the beginning of the class period. Any assignment handed in after that time is considered late.

No credit will be given for late homework. Late homework assignments will be graded, but will be recorded in the grade book as a zero. All late reports will incur a 10% penalty.  An additional 10% penalty will be added for each day the report is not turned in. If a student is in school, he or she is responsible for handing in all assignments that are due. If a student is excused from class for any reason, including but not limited to, athletic competitions, field trips, or doctor’s appointments, all assignments must still be handed in before the class period.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Any student found to be cheating (i.e. cheat sheet, copying from another individual, etc.) on a test, quiz, lab report or homework assignment, will be referred to the administration at North Clarion High School.  The student will also receive a zero for the test, quiz, or assignment with no chance to make up the assignment.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

  • You must be on time and prepared for class.
  • You must be quiet, courteous and attentive while material is being covered by the teacher or other students.
  • There is absolutely NO fooling around during labs.  You will be removed form the lab and given a Zero with NO warning.
  • You should participate in classroom discussions and ask questions.

** If you are silent, I will assume you understand the material.  If you do not understand you must tell me to slow down.

EXTRA HELP:

Grades will be posted on MMS each week. Please be sure to check your grades frequently. Chemistry is a fast paced academic class. A student must ask for help immediately if he or she is confused. as soon as you are confused.

Extra help is available:

7:15 to 8:15 am

2nd period (even), 9th period (odd)
