Hello everyone,  North Clarion will be providing enrichment and review materials for our classes.  These materials can be found in our Google classrooms.  A North Clarion email address is necessary to enroll in a Google Classroom.  If you need assistance with your email address or Google Classroom,  please call the school office or email:  rtheiss@nccsd.org

The eighth grade science course at North Clarion is designed to give students the tools necessary to successfully analyze situations and make logical data based conclusions. The purpose of the course is to help students think and enjoy science.  This course is a hands on course which teaches students the scientific method of problem solving.  Students will be encouraged to hypothesize about problems, design experiments to test their hypotheses, collect data, and make conclusions which can be supported by their data.

While developing an ability to solve problems, students will become proficient in collecting quantitative data using triple beam balances, thermometers, graduated cylinders and rulers. Students will then learn to express their data in various organized forms including graphs and charts. For the remainder of the year, students will apply their scientific skills while they study the physical science concepts of motion, electricity, magnetism, optics and matter.

During the course of the year, three science teachers will cooperatively teach this class as explained below:

1st nine weeks                 Nature of Science

Chapter 1 Describing Motion                         Mr. Guth

2nd nine weeks               Chapter 15   Waves

Chapter 17 Electromagnetic Waves            Mr. Guth

                                       Chapter 19  Electricity

3rd nine weeks               Chapter 7 Foundations of Chemistry

                                       Chapter  8 States of Matter

Chapter 9 / 10 Understanding the Atom        Mrs. Mizerak

                                                     and the Periodic Chart

                                       Chapter 4 Forces and Fluids

Evaluation:

Each quarter grade will be determined based on total points. A variety of evaluative tools will be used to assess student performance.   These tools will included:

Chapter Test

Announced and Unannounced Quizzes

Lab Reports

Worksheets and Homework

Notebooks

Written and Oral Reports

Each nine week grading period will be worth 25% of the student’s final science grade. A comprehensive midterm exam will be given at the end of the 2nd quarter.  This exam will be recorded as a 100 point test in the 2nd quarter.   A comprehensive final exam will cover the 3rd and 4th quarter.  This exam will be recorded as a 100 point test in the 4th quarter.

All assignments that are due must be handed in at the beginning of the class period.  A student will not receive credit for late work. A late assignment will be graded by the teacher, but recorded in the grade book as a zero. If a student is in school, he or she is responsible for handing in all assignments that are due. If a student is excused from class for any reason, including but not limited to, athletic competitions, field trips, or doctor’s appointments, all assignments must still be handed in before the class period.

Student Expectations:

         - Students must bring a pen or pencil to class.

         - Students must bring a notebook and folder to class each day. Notes are a very

important part of a student’s success, therefore notebooks and folders will be graded   after each unit.

         - Students must wear safety goggles when performing labs which use any type of reagents.  The safety goggles will be provided.

          - Students must be to class on time or they will be marked late for class.

          - Proper student behavior is required. Due to the hands on nature of the class, for the safety of each student, NO inappropriate behavior will be accepted. Improper behavior or misuse of the equipment will result in removal from the classroom.  Any class work missed due to the removal from the class will be given a ZERO.

Parent Contact:

All graded assignments will be posted to MMS.. Parents are encouraged to contact the teacher if there are any problems, questions or concerns. Extra help is available before, during and after school.
